7 Healthier Ways to Eat Your Favourite Foods

Healthy foods

looking after ourselves isn't just about teeth and gums and one of the best ways to stay healthy is by eating well. This includes choosing nutritious foods that provide essential vitamins and minerals, while avoiding unhealthy ones that contain too much fat, sugar, salt, or other additives.

Here are seven tips for eating healthier:

Prepare your own meals

These days it's never been easier to find and eat fast food. People in urban areas, can choose from sometimes hundreds of restaurants with a phone app and have food delivered within 30 minutes!

But, shopping for nutritious ingredients and cooking at home more often is a great way to make sure we also eat healthier.

Add some veggies to your pasta sauce

Pasta made with vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, spinach, and zucchini adds colour and flavour to dishes. This is also a good way to get some more vitamins and nutrients. Even if you're starting with a ready-made sauce, adding some extra vegetables is an easy way to make a meal healthier.

Try swapping out refined grains for whole grains

Whole grains are an excellent source of fibre, protein, iron, zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins. They also help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of certain cancers. However, because they take longer to digest than refined grains, people who consume them tend to feel fuller faster.

Go meatless once in a while

You don't have to adopt a vegan or vegetarian diet, but it doesn't hurt to reduce meat consumption.

Consider going meatless at least once a week. Meat contains saturated fat, which has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Instead, opt for beans, nuts, seeds, tofu, vegetables and whole grains. These foods contain protein, fibre, and essential nutrients that help keep you full longer.

Lean meat is best

When you do choose to prepare meat dishes, lean meat is the healthiest option. Some good examples are chicken breast, which is less fatty than leg or thigh, or lean beef mince.

Don't forget starch and carbs

Foods that are high in starch and carbohydrates, such and beans and potatoes are a good way to prepare filling meals that are lower in calories.

Cut back on sugar

Sugar is one of the top sources of calories in the British diet. It's found in processed foods, drinks, and even fruits and vegetables, depending on how they are packaged or prepared. A diet which is too high in sugar can contribute to obesity, and other health issues, not to mention tooth decay!
